About the Town of Munster

Munster was founded due to the placement of a general store started in the mid-1860s by Dutchman Jacob Munster.  During the industrial revolution of the late 1800s and early 1900s Munster saw tremendous growth due to its proximity to the Chicago job market and major industrialization occuring along the nearby Indiana, Lake Michigan shoreline. 

Today, Munster is a large-sized town encompassing about eight square miles.  It is bordered by Hammond, Highland, Schererville, and Griffith. It’s western most border is the Illinois-Indiana state line.  The 2010 census indicated there were 23,600 residents in Munster. Predictions for the 2020 census indicate a slight reduction in residents to 22,500 to 23,000.  

Munster is located just 30 miles southeast of the Chicago Loop. 

Career Opportunities in Munster

Munster has an eclectic local economy.  The town itself is home to many professional services, major retail, and locally owned retail businesses.  Major employers include Munster Community Hospital, The Times of Northwest Indiana newspaper, and two national brand distribution centers. 

Munster is only 30 miles from the Chicago Loop.  Many Munster residents commute to Chicago to take advantage of the many career opportunities available there.  Also, Munster is close to heavy industry facilities found along the Indiana lakeshore. This includes one of the largest oil refineries and some of the largest steel production operations in the world.

Students living in Munster attend School Town of Munster Corp. One of the reasons why Munster is on the list of best places to live in Northwest Indiana is that it continues to invest in its schools. 

In the last 20 years, two of its elementary schools have been completely rebuilt. Munster also invested in extracurricular sports for its residents to enjoy.  This included a major expansion to a state of the art athletics facility and aquatic center. Munster also has deployed educational initiatives to advance technology in education and STEM programs.

Getting Around Town in Munster – Transportation 

Munster does not have intra-town/city public transportation.  Major thoroughfares pass through and near the Town of Munster.  These include interstates I-80/90 and I-94 and major routes such as US 41 and US 30.  

Munster is also near the South Shore commuter rail line.  Munster residents can drive a short distance to a station in Hammond to board the train and commute into Chicago.

Weather Climate in Munster 

Munster’s midwestern location definitely gives its residents four clear seasons each year.  First, to focus on temperatures. Average lows in the winter months are in the teens and 20s.  Average highs are in the 20s and 30s. As spring rolls in temperature highs and lows increase with lows in the 40s and 50s and highs in the 50s to low 70s in late spring.  Summer lows are often in the upper 50s to low 70s and highs are in the 70s and 80s. During the fall the temperature lowers and similar temperatures as seen in spring occur.  Munster may be prone to brief periods of extreme cold or extreme heat and humidity in the winter and summer, respectively. 

Munster receives meaningful precipitation throughout the year.  There is no real dry season or wet season. Also, Munster does get snowfall every year.  Overall, Munster experiences a recurring, temperate climate as the calendar cycles through the seasons.
