Best Places to Live in Indiana: Lake County

Lake County Real Estate

If you are thinking about moving to Northwest Indiana or have been looking at real estate in Northwest Indiana you are likely seeing homes for sale in Lake County.  Prices for real estate in Lake County definitely affect the housing market in Northwest Indiana. This is because Lake County is home to about half of a million people!

Lake County real estate had a great 2019.  Nearly 6,500 homes sold in Lake County during 2019. The 2019 average home sale price in Lake County was $199,553 based on sales recorded in the GNIAR Multiple Listing Service.  This is 28% above the average home sale price in Indiana which was $156,102 during 2019. Also, Lake County real estate as a whole experienced a massive 6.9% increase in value from 2018 to 2019.

The strengths pushing Lake County real estate to such high prices include its proximity to Chicago, great career and educational opportunities, but most of all is the fact that some of the best cities in Indiana can be found in Lake County.

The Best Places to Live in Lake County

1. St. John

This burg of 18,000 residents with Grade A schools, a household income of over $100,000, and an easy commute to Chicago stand out as one of the best cities in Indiana.  If you are seeking out safe places to live in Indiana definitely take a good look at St. John. While Lake County’s crime rate, in general, is one of the lowest in the state, Safewise.com has ranked St. John as the safest city in Indiana.

2. Munster

Just 30 miles southeast of Chicago’s Loop is Munster.  This town boasts a low crime rate, great schools, and household incomes nearing $100,000 per year.  The residents of Munster have routinely invested in their city. From improving schools, maintaining parks, to redeveloping areas of blight, Munster does not wait.  Its residents take action to continue their town’s progress. This consistently makes Munster one of the best towns in Indiana.

3. Crown Point

Crown Point is another of the great cities in Lake County Indiana.  Crown Point is the county seat for Lake County, so there are many government offices and related career opportunities there.  The average income per household is about $64,000, which is above the Indiana average household income. Crown Point also has a Grade A school system.  Crime is low, too, with Safewise.com recently declaring Crown Point the fourth safest city in Indiana.

4. Merrillville

Merrillville is one of the most interesting towns in Indiana.  Despite having over 30,000 residents, it is still classified as a town. What makes Merrillville unique is that it became a commercial hub for all of Northwest Indiana.  The US 30 corridor from Taft St. to 93rd Ave. is dotted continuously with retailers, one of the largest malls in the country, and many restaurants. Merrillville is also home to several major companies including Centier Bank and Nisource.  An abundance of career opportunities waiting for you in Merrillville.

5. Schererville

Just down the highway from Merrillville is Schererville.  It, like Merrillville, is crossed by major thoroughfares, US 41 and US 30.  This naturally gave rise to a substantial amount of commercial activity being developed along these heavily traveled corridors.  With a low crime rate, high household income, and the Grade A Lake Central School Corporation, it is no surprise that Schererville is one of the best towns in Indiana.  If you are looking for great places to live in Indiana and want to be close to Chicago, take a good look at Schererville.

6. Dyer

Resting on the Indiana-Illinois state line is the town of Dyer.  Dyer is located only 30 miles from Downtown Chicago and 12 miles from the South Side.  With a population under 20,000 people, some of the lowest crime rates in the state, and household income of around $100,000. Dyer is one of the best places to live in Indiana.
