Highland was first settled in the mid-1800s but became a municipality in 1910.  Many of Highland’s early settlers were Dutch immigrants. 

Highland, Indiana has a population of 23,727 people.  Estimates for the 2020 census are a population between 22,500 and 23,000 people.  Highland is located about 35 miles southeast of the Chicago Loop. The town covers seven square miles.  Highland is bordered by Munster, Griffith, Schererville, and Hammond.

Highland has a temperate, midwestern climate.  Highland experiences all four seasons and receives precipitation throughout the year.   Highland’s warmest months are July, August, and September where highs are often in the upper 70s to low 80s and lows in the upper 50s to low 70s.  December, January, and February are the coldest months with highs in the 20s and 30s and lows in the teens and 20s. Fall and spring are similar with highs in the 40s to low 70s and lows in the upper 30s to the 50s.

Highland does not have public transportation. However, Highland remains one of the best towns in Indiana because its residents can easily get around and get out to other opportunities. US 41 is a major thoroughfare in Highland and leads to both US 30 and I-94.  

Highland residents can also utilize the South Shore Commuter rail line.  This commuter rail service has stations in nearby Hammond and East Chicago.  The South Shoreline has multiple trains running each day between Chicago and South Bend.
