Michigan City is a city of about 33,000 residents located in northern La Porte County, Indiana. The city is located at the shoreline of Lake Michigan. The city is located less than five miles from the Indiana-Michigan state line. The city is about 50 miles from Downtown Chicago. However, the South Shore Commuter Railline directly serves the city. The commuter train makes multiple daily stops at Michigan City’s 11th Street and Carroll Avenue stations.
Major employers in Michigan City include Franciscan Hospital. Franciscan opened a new state of the art hospital in 2019. Other notable employers include NIPSCO, Boyd Gaming, Sullair, and Sullivan-Palatek. Michigan City is the leading manufacturer of air compressors in America.
Michigan City residents have the greatest abundance of recreational activities of any community in Northwest Indiana. The city has a marina, is home to the Blue Chip Casino, and the amazing lakefront Washington Park featuring the only lighthouse in Indiana. The city is located just outside of the Indiana Dunes National Park. Residents can take the train into Chicago or head over to South Bend. Or, Michigan City residents can head up into Michigan to Harbor Country.
Beachwalk is a subdivision located at the shores of Lake Michigan. The buildings here are large beach style houses built in the early 2000s through present day.
