La Porte (a.k.a. LaPorte) is a city of about 23,000 people located in north-central La Porte County, Indiana. La Porte is the county seat and is home to many of the county government offices. The city is located 12 miles from the Indiana portion of the Lake Michigan shoreline. La Porte is about 60 miles from downtown Chicago. La Porte is only 20 miles from South Bend, Indiana.
La Porte has a long history. The area was first settled as by traders. During the late 1800s and early 1900s major manufacturing companies began producing goods in LaPorte. At one point, La Porte, Indiana had more millionaires as a portion of its population than any other American city. Today, several major manufacturers are still present in the city. These include Alcoa, American-Renolit, and Arconic Power & Propulsion.
La Porte students are served by the La Porte Community School Corporation. The city’s school district has seven elementary schools, an intermediary, a middle school and a high school. La Porte Community School Corporation is geographically the largest district in the state of Indiana. Safewise.com ranked La Porte as the 22nd Safest Indiana City in its annual report.
La Porte residents have tremendous outdoor opportunities, too. Central to the city is Pine Lake, which is a 550 acre all sports lake. There is also Stone Lake, Clear Lake, and Fishtrap Lake. Each of these provide La Porte residents an opportunity to enjoy life on the water. The city’s parks & recreation department cares for nearly 20 parks around the city. Each Independence Day La Porte hosts the largest Fourth of July parade in the state. La Porte is often called the honorary state capital for a day on the Fourth of July.
Along Michigan and Indiana Avenues you will see large mansions from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. These buildings are marvelous. They are very large and many have maintained their original architecture. You will see many Victorian inspired houses along these two streets.
Each of these subdivisions feature larger single family houses built in the 1990s through the 2010s. These homes do more to incorporate contemporary Midwestern design trends.
